Adopting a Dalmatian

Frequently asked questions about acquiring an Dalmatian - the pros and cons of adopting versus going through a breeder, and associated costs.

You can adopt a Dalmatian at a much lower cost than buying one from a breeder. The cost of adopting a Dalmatian is around $300 in order to cover the expenses of caring for the dog before adoption. In contrast, buying Dalmatians from breeders can be prohibitively expensive. Depending on their breeding, they usually cost anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000.

The easiest way to adopt a Dalmatian would be through a rescue that specializes in Dalmatians. A great place to start is starting a breed search on Adopt a Pet. The search will show you all the available Dalmatians in your area.

Dalmatian fun facts

Fun Facts:

Dalmatians were long-referred to as "coach dogs" because they have a unique affinity for both horses and running alongside carriages. In the mid-1800s, they were used to calm down horses and to guard the rigs, most notably used with firefighting rigs.

Before Dalmatians became known as carriage dogs, they were used as hunting hounds, vermin catchers, bird retrievers, herders, and circus dogs.

Our first president George Washington owned a Dalmatian named Madame Moose, and was known to be an early breeder of Dalmatians.
